Some pathological conditions can become worse to necessitate a person to undergo ostomy surgery. An ostomy refers to a diversion in the digestive or urinary tract. In most cases, the ostomy remains easily manageable. In some cases, however, complications can arise. In this article, we will talk about stoma complications. Necrosis This condition occurs as a result of inadequate blood supply, leading to a dark, black stoma. Reasons for this condition include tension on the mesentery, the extra thickness of the abdominal wall, tighter suture line, and blood clotting. The doctor will devise a treatment plan based on the extent of necrosis. Detachment Too much tension on mesentery can also result in the stoma separating from the adjoining skin. This detachment of stoma leads to its sinking or retraction, making it hard for it to open into the ostomy pouch properly. You can treat this problem by using a modified convex pouching system, which pressed the peristomal skin to encourage the necessary protrusion of the stoma. Stenosis This condition refers to the extreme narrowing of the stoma, leading to difficulty passing stools. Reasons for this condition include inadequate suturing of the stoma, edema, mucocutaneous separation, and formation of scar that compresses the stoma. Treatments to fix this issue may include stoma dilation and surgical intervention. Prolapse Prolapse refers to the telescoping of the bowel through the stoma. Common risk factors that may lead to this complication include poor abdominal wall support and the pressure buildup inside the abdomen due to sneezing, coughing, laughing, and tumor formation. The way to manage this issue is to reduce protrusion by applying gentle pressure on the stoma. The application of a binder or prolapse belt is also a way to manage this issue conservatively. Hernia A hernia is a condition that refers to the bowel protruding into the subcutaneous tissue around the stoma. This development causes a noticeable bulge in the peristomal skin area. Your doctor will recommend wearing a binder or a modified ostomy appliance to manage this issue medically. You may need surgery to resolve the issue if herniation has resulted in a blockage. To prevent herniation, you can wear a binder before lifting heavy objects, and guard your stoma with your hands while coughing. Obstruction
Certain diseases and kinking of a bowel loop inside the abdomen can result in a bowel obstruction, which results in the patient’s inability to pass stools. To manage this issue, you may need surgical intervention.

Whom so ever smelt it dealt it. This is a term that gets passed around a lot in grade school. In some circles, it never ends, but it is one of the greatest fears for newcomers to the ostomy world. I believe that if you just got out of surgery this is one area that many people fear the most. For myself, I feared it more than many and it was because of one of my passions revolves around the sense of smell. The idea that I would be unable to follow a passion of mine because I had a stoma and now live with an ostomy bag flat out made me sad. But my initial impressions and thoughts were so wrong. I was overcome with fear and I let it win for a time. Luckily, there are amazing people who are willing to share their lives and educate on how to live and hunt with an ostomy. I know that I sounded so petty, but when I asked about the smell and what could be done with an ostomy bag I really meant it. The fear was that it would not be scent proof enough for me to be able to go out and do what I love to do the most and that is hunting. I am not a hillbilly or a professional, but I do enjoy not paying for meat throughout the year. In the last several years I have gone out and been able to harvest a single deer. Each one of those deer gave us enough meat to last an entire year without purchasing ground been or steaks from the grocery store. So financially it is a great help to us to save hundreds if not a thousand or so dollars each year by me going out to hunt. It is not that we are poor, but the financial boost and also the gratefulness that comes from the experience is worth it. This really scared me due to my new stoma because deer have up to 40+ times the smelling ability that humans do. This is one of the biggest senses that is used against hunters and smell is a very hard thing to hide. I was afraid that since my ostomy bag would be with me and on an all-day stay in the woods that it would constantly give my position away. Luckily, I called around and talked with lots of ostomy manufacturers about the topic. They have many products that are actually not only scent covering, but scent blocking as well. The technology in ostomy gear was similar to the highest end hunting gear as far as scent blocking was concerned. This gave me great joy and also a boost because now I was able to not have to worry about bathroom breaks during hunting. This is a distinct advantage over most other hunters in fact. So instead of being disadvantaged as I first thought I was actually one step ahead. So when it comes to smells the ostomy gear out there is really fantastic. I can attest to this because I was successful again this year. The scent blocking work from my ostomy bag and gear has been amazing and not only was it great for the outdoors, but it works perfectly well in all social situations. Don't be afraid of that issue at all. You are going to not be embarrassed by a smelt it dealt it joke. |
